Now that I’ve announced my next novel, Cultivation, I thought it would be informative, for those of you who may be curious, to unveil my tentative plans for all the books I want to write. My “novel slate” (if that’s a thing).
Basically, I’m shooting for a major release every 8 months, with a few hopeful exceptions added in there. Whether this will end up being sustainable for me in my current life situation is yet to be determined, but I believe I can do it.
That means that for the next few years I will see two novels released on odd years (in April and December) and one novel released on even years (in August).
So, without further ado, here are my planned novels up until 2025 (after which I’ll explain the next “phase” of my hare-brained indefatigable plan.)
(Note: This list will be updated periodically as announcements are made, such as revealing the hidden titles. [Yes, they all have titles already, I just don’t want to let all the cats out of their bags quite yet.] The schedule is also 100% subject to change.)
December 2021: Cultivation (horror novel about a university)
Spring 2022: Soulcage (a science fiction novella I decided to slip into my schedule)1
August 2022: Untitled (fantasy novel about a disabled girl who sets out to stop a dark lady)
April 2023: Untitled (horror/science fiction novel about aliens)
December 2023: Dread (young adult horror/urban fantasy novel—the first of The Werewolf Accounts trilogy)
August 2024: Untitled (the second of The Werewolf Accounts trilogy)
April 2025: Untitled (the conclusion of The Werewolf Accounts trilogy)
Fall 2025: Untitled (a science fiction post-apocalyptic/superhero novel)2
December 2025: Untitled (science fiction dystopian novel about a future world with no privacy or free speech)
1I normally don’t plan on writing novellas, but this story seemed like it needed to be written.
2Because The Werewolf Accounts trilogy are planned to be relatively shorter books than my usual, I am hopeful to fit in this sci-fi post-apocalyptic/superhero book after the third T.W.A. book is released.
So that’s 2021-2025. But believe it or not, there’s more. Actually, you ought to believe it, seeing as I’ve branded my author career with the name “Arcreonis”, which I’ve previously stated is an upcoming epic fantasy series, “the continuing story of the people of a fictional world called Aeruul, with roughly 8 books set within four eras of time spanning thousands of years of history.” As you might have guessed what with the whole branding thing, these are the stories that I am the most excited to tell and that I hope will define my authorial career. I’ve been planning them for about four years now in a connected sense, but the ideas behind many of the stories stretch back much longer than that.
I was so excited to write Arcreonis that I tried writing the first book, Shepherds of Chaos, in 2020 after finishing Seclurm: Devolution. But that was only the third book I had attempted to write, and even though I wrote quite a bit (roughly 90,000 words, although it was perhaps only a quarter of the story), the book just wasn’t turning out like I’d hoped. It wasn’t bad, but as I came to a turning point in the plot I realized two things:
First, that I needed to do more research. The idea of Arcreonis is to be a highly-developed and very believable fictional world, and I didn’t do nearly enough prior planning or research to be able to do that to the degree I want. (There’s just no lazing your way to that sort of thing, as lazy a researcher as I am inclined to be.)
Second, I realized that I needed more writing experience in order to get Arcreonis to be at the level of quality that I want, or need, it to be. So, I shelved Shepherds of Chaos (temporarily!) and started writing Cultivation and planning out a schedule for what books to write essentially as practice for Arcreonis.
But I also need to devote time—lots of it—to developing and researching the world of Aeruul (as well as planning what is pretty much an 8-novel story arc) before I can write the books. Therefore, my current plan (subject to adjustments as needed) is to take the year of 2026 and devote it exclusively to finishing plans for Arcreonis so that I’m prepared to write it. There likely won’t be novel releases during that year, but it will prepare me to release books very consistently afterward.
Which brings me to where things get really crazy. Once Arcreonis is planned out I will devote all my writing time to writing the books. My tentative plan is to write and release just one a year at that point, taking extra time to craft them as intricately as reasonably possible. So here is the schedule for the 8 novels of Arcreonis:
(Note: There are four distinct eras from which stories in Arcreonis will be drawn, which are informally known as the “Shepherd era”, the “Frontier era”, the “Paladin era”, and the “Starlight era”.)
- 2027: Shepherds of Chaos (the first of the Shepherd era novels set in a 1st-century B.C. style world)
- 2028: Judgment’s Dusk (conclusion to the Shepherd era novels)
- 2029: Untitled (the first of the Frontier era novels set in an 18th-century A.D. style world)
- 2030: Untitled (conclusion to the Frontier era novels)
- 2031: Untitled (the first of the Paladin era novels set in a 20th-century style world)
- 2032: Untitled (conclusion to the Paladin era novels)
- 2033: Untitled (Starlight-era novel about prophets set in a world out of time)
- 2034: Autumn’s End (the conclusion to the Starlight-era novels, and the conclusion of Arcreonis)
So, that’s quite a few novels, eh?—17 in total if you count Seclurm. But that’s not all!
Then there are all the other novels I have ideas for and would like to write. The problem is, I’m not sure when I’ll be able to write them. Arcreonis is going to be my priority once I feel I’m ready to write it. If I were a full-time author as it stands, I might be able to kick up my novel-writing to a release every 6 months to make things flow quicker, but as of now I think that is pushing it for something that doesn’t support me financially and that I’m running mostly by myself. So it may unfortunately be the case that I won’t be able to write these until after Arcreonis is done, or if I change my mind about writing each Arcreonis novel one right after the other. So, consider these as the literature equivalent of vaporware until further notice.
Here’s a list of a few of them which hopefully will see the light of day eventually:
- Fantasy Quest (humorous fantasy-style “Galaxy Quest” riff)
- Untitled (fantasy novel about people being used as an energy source)
- Untitled (science fiction action novel about dimensions being fused together)
- Untitled (thriller about the world’s water supply becoming contaminated and making people animalistic)
- Sequels to various books if I feel like it and/or the people demand it
So, there you have it. My novel slate for the next 13 years. In some ways it feels like a long time, and yet in other ways, the thought that I could actually have all these planned novels written and completed by 13 years from now is stupefying to me.
I will have all of you to thank if I end up completing my lofty, lofty goals.
I hope you’ll join me for the ride.
