Poem dated 5/20/2021 —
Thoughts At End Of Time
by Noah Gallagher
Death has claimed, but we persist
Though bonds to earth are broken
We specters grasp and wander wide
Purposeless as children.
~
When we reach elysian summit
Far beyond antediluvian
Do you think we’ll find the things we lost—
Our beloved, old provisions?
~
The timeless, endless days will hold
Ashes of our infancy
We stand at end of time
As the shouting flame of culture dies.
~
Without the key to souls
Against our dissolution
What will succor spirits then,
When earth itself has faded?
~
When each person stands alone
And naked in the void,
Will emptiness recede in grace, or
Coldly kill and vanish?
~
The clarity of chaos comes
And earth does softly fade
We alone remain, the residue;
The children of the withered home.
~
I think we’ll find amid the gloom
Hands reaching out to touch
Comprehension filling us
With certainty illuminating.
~
What shall we fear in death?
Not folly, failure, doubt, or loss
For something in us cannot die:
The pure eye of the human.
