“One” (poem)

Poem dated 11/1/2022–

One

by Noah Gallagher

You
Live
Your life
And I’ll
Live
Mine.
Independency is hot, it’s “in”
Hear the glory and the glamor call
From separate places far away.
So you
Go
Your way
And I’ll
Go
Mine.
From time to time,
When we cross paths,
We’ll maybe wave,
But nothing more;
For there is nothing more to say
Except to hold on to the past.
You will go
Your way
And I will go
Mine.
We’ll watch each other from afar
With careful, curious, clinical eyes
And never think what could have been
Or of what yet could be.
For you
Have gone
Your way
And I
Have gone
Mine
To separate, singular places
So high, advanced, beyond reproach
Beyond the shallow simpleness
Of foolish things like
Love,
Togetherness,
And home.
We seek a greater land to claim
Than what we’d claim together;
We
Will go
Our separate
Ways
And never
Look
Back
For our memories of each other
Fly with dust behind our active feet
We trek to places high and great
To lonely peaks just meant for one
To carved-out caves and empty glades
Where happiness is said to be.

~

But
You
Didn’t
Find it,
And nor
Did
I.
Our lonely paths led to no place
And the greatness was not so.
In pride we boldly crafted
Grand, high spaces meant for one.
But one,
We both apart did find,
Is infinitely less than two.
