“Empty Toys” (poem)

Poem dated 12/9/22–

Empty Toys

by Noah Gallagher

I don’t need you
And you don’t need me;
For I keep a broken set of toys
To play with when I’m lowly
To play at having love and joy.

~

You had caught a little glimpse of me
And with childlike hope believed I could be
That one you’ve always wanted
Inducted willfully into the charmed and stylish world of YOU–
Obviously enticed by your glamor and your charm
Sucked into the whirlwind of your blessed, attractive life–
A predictable delivery unto your deserving, lovely self
Of a man palatably empty of that nasty old humanity.

~

Little did you dream that
That’s exactly what I wanted too
But I wanted it for me;
I dreamed of taking and placing you in MY world,
A woman inexplicably all willing to join me
Somehow foolish enough to truly need me
Automatically admiring of me enough to want me
And empty enough to never judge me.

~

But there’s no one who’s empty like that
No one who truly needs another;
We’re all quite full of ourselves,
Satisfied with our reflections,
Needs all met by toys and clothes.
For why enter another’s world
When we can have our very own?
Our worlds are better, prettier, safer
And perfectly controlled
So long as we remain alone.

~

Why be YOUR toy
When you could be MINE?
And since YOU won’t be mine,
And I won’t be yours,
We’ll keep to our empty toys
And play at never needing
“WE.”
